Temperance
14
balance · synthesis · moderation · patience
“Between two vessels I pour until a third thing forms.”
Two seemingly opposed forces are being held at once, in a single pair of hands. The card corrects a common reading: real balance is not halving each side, but letting both continue to exert themselves inside one vessel.

“I pass the old fire into the next pair of hands.”
Transmission, instruction, rite — an order that can be placed into another's hands.

Temperance in front
In the Rider-Waite-Smith picture, Temperance is a winged angel pouring water from one cup into another, one foot resting in a pool and the other on the bank, a path behind leading up toward distant mountains. The pour looks impossible, almost sideways, as if the water were obeying a gentler law.
As a personality card, Temperance describes someone who moderates, mixes and harmonizes. People with this card are often the calm presence in a tense room, good at seeing what two positions have in common and patient with slow processes. Their outer life may look balanced; the balance is usually the result of continuous adjustment, not of an absence of extremes.
The Hierophant underneath
The soul card is The Hierophant: a robed teacher seated between two pillars, one hand raised in blessing, two figures kneeling before him and crossed keys at his feet. He stands for teaching, lineage and the knowledge a community holds in common.
As a soul card he suggests that, beneath the flexible surface, a 14/5 person is looking for something worth belonging to, a tradition deep enough to learn from for a lifetime. The search may lead into an established path, or into building a personal practice out of several. Either way, the need to learn from and pass on something larger than oneself runs deep.
Blending and inheriting
The tension between these cards is the tension between personal synthesis and received authority. Temperance wants to mix; The Hierophant wants to preserve the recipe. A 14/5 person may feel this as guilt when adapting a teaching, or as frustration when a community resists change. The Hierophant's shadow is conformity and deference; Temperance's shadow is a middle path so careful that it never commits to anything.
At their best the cards complete each other. The tradition supplies depth, and Temperance keeps it alive by bringing it into contact with real life. Many good teachers have this shape: rooted in a lineage and unafraid to adapt it for the person in front of them.
Living with 14/5
A practical question for this pairing is which parts of your practice you received and which you made, and whether you can honor both without pretending one is the other. The Hierophant is the soul card of 14/5 alone, so the single-card page for 5 shows what The Hierophant looks like without Temperance's softening. Read together, the two pages show how much of a 14/5 life is the art of keeping a tradition alive by letting it change in your hands.
Temperance as a year card
Temperance as a year card makes balance and blending the theme. The angel pours water between two cups, one foot on land and one in the water, finding the right mixture by patient adjustment. The year's question is where you could combine things that seem opposed, and where moderation would serve you better than extremes.
That might mean pacing yourself, joining two parts of your life that usually stay separate, or healing slowly instead of all at once. Temperance favours steady practice over dramatic change, and it notices the small adjustments that make a mixture work.
Which birthdays get it as a year card
Add your birth month and day to the year, then reduce as for the Personality card. It gives the year a theme to reflect on; it does not say what the year will bring.
