Your tarot birth cards are calculated, not drawn. Add your birth month, day and year together, add up the digits of that sum until it names one of the twenty-two Major Arcana, and you have your Personality card; reduce that number again to a single digit and you have your Soul card. The same date always gives the same pair, which is why many readers keep their birth cards as a fixed point to come back to while their daily draws change around them.
Enter your birthday above. The arithmetic runs in this browser: the date is not sent to Lunarcana and nothing is stored. Further down you'll find what each card stands for, how the numbers are added, every pairing the method can produce, and a few ways to work with your cards in a journal.
What tarot birth cards are
Birth cards come from reading the Major Arcana through numerology. The twenty-two trumps are numbered 0 to 21, and the method treats each number as a door: a birthday reduces to a number, and the number opens onto a card. Because only the trumps are numbered this way, your birth cards are always Major Arcana — never a pip card or a court figure.
Pairing a Personality card with a Soul card was popularized by Mary K. Greer, whose books on tarot and numerology made birth cards a familiar practice among English-speaking readers from the mid-1980s on. Other teachers use the same arithmetic under different names, and some add a card for the current year. What they share is the idea that a date you did not choose can still be read as a set of themes you recognize.
None of this is a prediction. A birth card does not say what is going to happen or what kind of person you have to be. It offers two images to hold up against your own life, with a simple question attached: where do I see this in myself, and where don't I?
The Personality card
The Personality card comes from the full sum of your birthday, reduced only as far as needed to land on a number no higher than 22. It is usually read as your outward style: how you approach a task, what other people notice first, the strengths you reach for without thinking — and the habits that overplay them.
If your Personality card is The Emperor, you might recognize a gift for structure and, on a tired day, a pull to control what could be shared. If it is The Star, perhaps a steady hope that carries other people, alongside a tendency to give away reserves you need yourself. Both sides can be true at different times; the card names the territory, not the verdict.
The Soul card
The Soul card is the Personality number reduced again, digit by digit, until a single figure from 1 to 9 remains. Several Personality cards share one Soul card — 10 and 19 both arrive at The Magician — so it is read as the deeper current that a whole family of outward styles grows from.
Where the Personality card describes how you move, the Soul card is often taken as what you keep returning to: the question underneath your choices, the quality you feel most yourself practicing. It tends to make more sense over years than over days, which is why many readers keep it in a journal rather than consult it.
When your Personality number is already a single digit, both cards are the same. Nothing is missing: it reads as an unusually direct line between what you show and what moves you.
How to calculate your birth cards
All you need is your date of birth and a little patience with addition. This is the method Mary K. Greer teaches in her book Who Are You in the Tarot?, and the calculator above follows it exactly.
Add the month, the day and the full year together as whole numbers. For April 13, 1975: 4 + 13 + 1975 = 1992.
Add the digits of that sum: 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21. If the result is 22 or less, that is your Personality number. If it is higher, add its digits again, and repeat until it is 22 or less.
For the Soul number, keep adding the digits of the Personality number until one digit remains: 21 becomes 2 + 1 = 3.
Match each number to the Major Arcana card that carries it. A result of exactly 22 stands for The Fool, card 0, the one trump the method counts as 22.
April 13, 1975 → 4 + 13 + 1975 = 1992 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21 → Personality card: The World · Soul card: The Empress (2 + 1 = 3).
Some sources add every digit of the date on its own instead (4 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 5 = 30, then 3), and on about half of all birthdays that route lands on a different card. Lunarcana follows Greer's whole-number sum, here and on your profile. If a book or another site gives you a different pair, read both; the comparison is often revealing.
All 22 birth numbers
Every birthday reduces to one of these numbers. From 10 to 22 the Personality and Soul cards differ — thirteen pairings in all. From 1 to 9 a single card plays both parts.
Two quirks of the arithmetic: no birth date reduces to 1, so The Magician appears only as a Soul card, behind 10 and 19. And 2 is rare: it needs the month, day and year to add up to exactly 2000, which happens on about one date in two hundred, so most people who carry The High Priestess carry her behind 11 or 20.
Two cards · 10 to 22
- 10Wheel of Fortune · The Magician
- 11Justice · The High Priestess
- 12The Hanged Man · The Empress
- 13Death · The Emperor
- 14Temperance · The Hierophant
- 15The Devil · The Lovers
- 16The Tower · The Chariot
- 17The Star · Strength
- 18The Moon · The Hermit
- 19The Sun · The Magician
- 20Judgement · The High Priestess
- 21The World · The Empress
- 22The Fool · The Emperor
Working with your birth cards
Birth cards reward slow attention. A few ways readers use them:
- Lay both cards out and write one sentence for each: where you saw this card in yourself this week, and where you didn't.
- Notice when your Personality card turns up in an ordinary reading. It can be a cue to ask whether a familiar strength is being overused.
- Read your Soul card's upright and reversed meanings side by side, and note which feels closer right now. Come back to the note in a year.
- Compare cards with a friend or partner. Shared numbers, or one person's Personality card turning out to be the other's Soul card, make for a good conversation — not a compatibility score.
If a card feels wrong, that is worth writing down too. The method is a lens, not a label, and the most useful question it raises is often why a particular image doesn't fit.
