Birth card 8: Strength

Strength

When a birth date reduces to 8, Strength is both the personality card and the soul card. The Rider-Waite-Smith picture shows a woman in white resting her hands on a lion's jaws, a garland of flowers around her waist and the figure-eight sign of infinity above her head. There is no struggle in it. The lion is not beaten; it is met.

Doubled, Strength becomes a life's way of working: courage that does not raise its voice, persistence that wears down resistance instead of breaking it, a capacity to be with what is wild in yourself and in others without either fleeing it or trying to destroy it. People with this number often discover that their power is the quiet kind, and that it is easy for others, and for themselves, to underrate.

“I close the jaw with softness, breathing with the beast.”

A woman in a flower crown lays her hands lightly on the lion's jaws — the closing is not a matter of muscle but of a presence less alarmed than the beast itself. Force ripened into temperature; the temperature itself becomes rule.

Why 8 is Strength here: two numbering traditions

Older Tarot de Marseille decks number Justice as 8 and Strength as 11. Arthur Edward Waite reversed them in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck of 1909, following the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which matched the Major Arcana to the Hebrew letters and the zodiac and needed Strength beside Leo and Justice beside Libra. Mary K. Greer, who did most to popularize the birth-card method, counts in the Waite-Smith order, and the calculation used here follows it: 8 is Strength, 11 is Justice.

If you learned the method from a Marseille deck, your 8 is Justice. If you learned it from the Thoth deck, as in Angeles Arrien's handbook, your 8 is Adjustment, that deck's Justice, and Strength appears as Lust at 11. Neither is an error. They are two traditions counting the same cards in different orders.

The soul card of 17

Strength is the soul card of one pair: 17/8, with The Star in front. The Star is the calm after the storm, a figure kneeling by the water and pouring it out freely. Beneath that openness, Strength is the courage that makes hope sustainable. If your number is 8, the 17/8 page shows your card with a partner that softens it further.

Strength as a year card

Strength as a year card is a theme of gentle courage. The picture shows a woman closing a lion's jaws with open hands, and the strength in it is patience, not force: staying steady with strong feelings, your own or other people's, without crushing them or being carried off by them.

As a lens for the year, it invites you to notice how you meet pressure. Where do you grip harder when softening would work better? Where could kindness towards yourself make you braver rather than weaker? The card often speaks most to people who already push through things on willpower alone.

Which birthdays get it as a year card

Add your birth month and day to the year, then reduce as for the Personality card. It gives the year a theme to reflect on; it does not say what the year will bring.

  • What wild part of myself have I been trying to tame, when it might only need to be met?
  • Whose quiet strength do I recognize because it resembles mine?
