The 13 positions of the 12 Houses spread

1st House · Self, and how you show up

Position I · Pivot

The First House is where the wheel begins: how you show up, the manner you lead with, the way you start things. Read it as the lens for the whole spread — every other house is seen through it. Compare it with the 7th straight across the circle: self here, partnership there.

Reversed, the card points to a part of you that is being held back or not yet allowed to show.

2nd House · What you have, earn and value

Position II

What you have to work with: money and possessions, but also skills, time and your sense of your own worth. Read it beside the 1st — who you are and what you feel you are worth often move together — and across from the 8th, where resources are shared rather than held.

Reversed, look for a resource you are not using, or a worth you are not claiming.

3rd House · Everyday words, learning and the people nearby

Position III

The everyday traffic of words and ideas: conversations, messages, short trips, study, siblings and neighbours. Read it for how freely you are saying, and taking in, what matters. Opposite sits the 9th — the near and familiar here, the far horizon there.

Reversed, the card may show something left unsaid, or a way of thinking you keep returning to without questioning it.

4th House · Home, family and where you come from

Position IV

The base of the wheel: home, family, where you come from and what makes you feel settled. Read it as the ground you stand on before you reach for anything else. Across the circle is the 10th, your public role; a strong 10th over a shaky 4th is worth noticing.

Reversed, the card can point to roots that need tending, or a home that no longer fits who you are.

5th House · Play, creativity and what delights you

Position V

Whatever you do for the pleasure of it: play, creative work, romance, self-expression, time with children. Read it for where joy is flowing and where it has gone quiet. Set it against the 11th across the wheel — personal delight here, shared purpose there.

Reversed, the card often names a pleasure you keep postponing, or a creative impulse waiting for your permission.

6th House · Daily routines, work and care of the body

Position VI

The texture of ordinary days: routines, tasks, habits, service, and how you care for your body. This is a reflection on how you are living, not a medical reading — take any health concern to a professional. Opposite is the 12th: the scheduled day here, rest and retreat there.

Reversed, the card may show a routine that has stopped serving you, or care you keep deferring.

7th House · Close partnership and one-to-one bonds

Position VII

Close one-to-one bonds: a partner, a close collaborator, an important agreement — and open disagreement too. The card shows how you meet the other person and what you bring to the bond, not what they think or feel. Read it straight across from the 1st: self and other are two ends of one axis.

Reversed, look for something you hold back in partnership, or a pattern you keep repeating.

8th House · What you share at depth, and what it changes in you

Position VIII

What you share with others at depth — joint money, trust, emotional closeness, what is owed in either direction — and how that exchange is changing you. Read it across from the 2nd: what is mine there, what is ours here. Ask where you are being reshaped by what you give and receive.

Reversed, the card may show a change you are resisting, or an exchange that has fallen out of balance.

9th House · Beliefs, study, travel and the search for meaning

Position IX

Where your mind travels past the familiar: beliefs, philosophy, higher study, long journeys, the search for meaning. Read it for what is widening your view right now, or what has narrowed it. It answers the 3rd across the wheel — everyday knowledge there, larger understanding here.

Reversed, the card may name a belief you have outgrown but not yet put down.

10th House · Your work in the world and how you are seen

Position X

The top of the wheel: your work in the world, your reputation, the role others see you in, what you are building over the long run. Read it for how your public life feels from the inside, not for where your career is heading. Opposite is the 4th, home and roots — what you show and what holds you up.

Reversed, the card can show ambition you are holding back, or a role that no longer fits.

11th House · Friends, groups and the future you care about

Position XI

Friends, groups, networks and the future you care about beyond yourself — the people you belong with and the causes you share. Read it for where you feel part of something larger. It faces the 5th across the circle: personal joy there, shared purpose here.

Reversed, the card may point to a sense of not belonging, or a vision you have stopped saying out loud.

12th House · Solitude, rest and what works out of sight

Position XII

The last house before the wheel returns to the 1st: what works out of sight — rest, solitude, retreat, the quiet inner life, and patterns you have not yet put into words. Read it gently; what shows here is not a threat but something that wants time alone with you. Across the wheel is the 6th, the busy day.

Reversed, the card may show rest you keep refusing, or a feeling hidden even from yourself.

Centre · How you are holding all twelve areas together now

Position XIII

The centre card: your present ability to hold all twelve areas together. Read it last, as the way you are carrying the whole wheel at this moment — a stance, not a summary or an outcome. Look for the houses whose cards echo it and the ones that pull against it.

Reversed, it shows where that integration is still under way: a part of your life you are keeping apart from the rest.

How to read the 12 Houses spread

  1. 1

Shuffle with one broad intention — show me my life as it is now — rather than a narrow question; or name the one area that worries you and notice where its theme turns up.

  2. 2

Lay the 1st House at nine o'clock, where the Ascendant sits on a birth chart, and go counterclockwise: down to the 4th at the bottom, up to the 7th at three o'clock, over the 10th at the top, ending with the 12th just above the 1st. The thirteenth card goes in the centre.

  3. 3

Read the four angles first — the 1st (self), the 4th (home and roots), the 7th (partnership) and the 10th (vocation and public role). They are the spine of the wheel; the other eight houses fill in the detail between them.

  4. 4

Read across the circle in pairs — 1st and 7th, 2nd and 8th, 3rd and 9th, 4th and 10th, 5th and 11th, 6th and 12th — and mark the houses where the card feels strained or stuck, and the ones where it feels strong.

  5. 5

Read the centre card last, as how you are holding the whole wheel together now. Then choose one strong house you can lean on to ease a strained one, and write down one small step to take there.

What else lies between the cards

Each position gives its card a place of its own. Between the cards run a few quieter relationships — the star lines trace them.

12 Houses spread: common questions

How do you lay out a 12 houses tarot spread?
Start at nine o'clock, where the Ascendant sits on an astrological chart, and put the 1st House card there. Go counterclockwise: the 4th lands at the bottom, the 7th at three o'clock, the 10th at the top and the 12th just above the 1st. The thirteenth card goes in the centre and is read last, as how you are holding all twelve areas together.
Can I use the 12 houses spread for the year ahead?
You can lay it at New Year or on your birthday, and many people do — but read it as a snapshot of each area of your life as it stands that day, not as a forecast of what each area will bring. Note what each house shows, then come back to the page a few months later and see what you have changed. If you want the year divided into months, the 13-card year spread puts January to December on the same wheel.
What is the difference between the 12 houses spread and the 13-card year spread?
They share a shape — twelve cards in a ring and one in the centre — but read different things. Here each outer card is an area of life, laid counterclockwise from nine o'clock as on an astrological chart, and the centre card comes last. In the year spread the centre keynote is laid first and the twelve months run clockwise from the top, like a clock face.
Do I need to know astrology to read it?
No. Each position names its house and the area of life it covers, so you can read it like any other spread. If you know your birth chart, you can add a layer: note which houses hold planets in your chart and see whether the cards in those houses speak more loudly. The spread itself does not need your birth time.

Bring a single question, and turn these 13 cards over slowly.
