Death

transformation · ending · release · rebirth
“I let what must die pass; the deeper life comes forward.”
A force of clearing — what has already ended is merely confirmed. The card does not make the ending; it names it.

Death in front
The Rider-Waite-Smith picture shows a skeleton in black armor riding a white horse and carrying a black banner marked with a white rose. In front of the horse a king has fallen, while a bishop, a young woman and a child respond in different ways. In the distance the sun rises between two towers.
As a personality card, Death describes someone whose life tends to move in clear chapters, who can let go when it is time, and who may be called on by others during their own endings. People with this card often have a low tolerance for pretense and for situations that are being kept alive past their natural end. They can seem intense; much of that intensity is honesty about change.
The Emperor underneath
The soul card is The Emperor: a crowned ruler on a stone throne carved with rams' heads, armor beneath his robe, barren mountains behind. He is order, responsibility and the will to build something that lasts.
As a soul card, The Emperor gives Death a purpose. The endings in a 13/4 life are not random destruction; they serve an inner need for a structure that is true. Notice that both figures wear armor. Each in its own way is prepared, and neither is careless with what it ends or what it builds.
Ending and building
The tension is easy to feel. Death wants to clear; The Emperor wants to keep. A 13/4 person may swing between dismantling everything and holding on too hard, or may find it painful to end structures they once built with great care. The Emperor's shadow is rigidity, and the Death card's shadow is ending things in order to avoid feeling them.
Working together, the cards produce rare skill: knowing what to take apart and how to rebuild well. The Emperor learns from Death that no structure is permanent, and Death learns from The Emperor that clearing is only half the job.
Living with 13/4
A good question for this pair is not what needs to end, but what the ending is making room for. If the answer is vague, the clearing may be premature. The Emperor is also the soul card of 22/4, with The Fool in front; that pairing shows the same builder underneath a very different personality, one that leaps rather than clears.
The number 13 carries its own baggage in popular culture, and the card's name adds to it. Inside the Major Arcana, though, 13 is simply the step after The Hanged Man's surrender: once the old view has been let go, something actually changes. That sequence, release and then real change, describes many 13/4 lives better than any superstition about the number.
Death as a year card
Death as a year card is a theme of endings and clearing, not of literal loss. In tarot the card stands for what has run its course: a role, a habit, a story you tell about yourself. Its question for the year is what is ready to finish so that something else has room.
You might use it to close a chapter cleanly instead of letting it drag on, to mourn something honestly, or to notice what you keep alive out of fear of the empty space. The card's picture includes a rising sun behind the figures — endings and beginnings belong to the same movement.
Which birthdays get it as a year card
Add your birth month and day to the year, then reduce as for the Personality card. It gives the year a theme to reflect on; it does not say what the year will bring.
