Birth cards 15/6: The Devil and The Lovers

The Devil · The Lovers

A birth date that adds up to 15 gives The Devil as the personality card and The Lovers as the soul card, since 1 + 5 = 6. Before anything else, it is worth saying that The Devil in a birth reading is not a statement about character, and certainly not about evil. It is a card about the material world, desire, ambition, intensity and the ways people get attached to things, all of which are human and none of which are wrong in themselves.

The Rider-Waite-Smith deck drew these two cards as deliberate echoes. In The Lovers, a man and a woman stand beneath an angel. In The Devil, a man and a woman stand beneath a horned, bat-winged figure, loosely chained to his pedestal. The same arrangement, seen in two lights. A 15/6 life tends to circle the question that composition poses: what is freely chosen, and what has become a binding?

The Devil in front

As a personality card, The Devil describes a person with appetite, in the broadest sense: for experience, success, pleasure, depth, intensity. People with this card are often magnetic and unusually honest about what they want. They may be drawn to the parts of life others avoid looking at, including power, money, sexuality and taboo, and they often have a sharp eye for hypocrisy.

The card's shadow is familiar from its picture: compulsion, the comfort of a chain one could lift off, a habit or relationship or ambition that has quietly stopped being a choice. The personality card does not say these things are present. It names the territory where a 15/6 person does their most important learning.

The Lovers underneath

The soul card is The Lovers, the card of choice, values and alignment. Underneath The Devil's intensity sits a person for whom the deepest question is not what they want but what they are willing to stand beside. As a soul card, The Lovers is the capacity to choose again, the freedom that The Devil's chains never fully remove.

This is why the pairing is more hopeful than it first sounds. The Devil supplies the energy, the hunger and the willingness to go into difficult territory. The Lovers supplies the compass.

Binding and choosing

Over a lifetime, this pair is less a fixed tension than a practice. Every strong attachment is an occasion to ask which card is speaking. Is this bond a living choice, renewed on purpose? Or has it become a structure that holds the person in place? The answer can change over time for the same relationship, job or habit, which is why the question keeps returning.

When the two cards work together, a 15/6 person brings full intensity to what they have actually chosen. Desire is not suppressed; it is aimed. The same honesty that lets a 15/6 person admit what they want also lets them notice, sooner than most, when wanting has turned into needing.

The Devil and The Lovers in a reading

When these two cards turn up side by side in an ordinary spread, they raise a related but more immediate set of questions about attachment and desire; the combination page on The Devil and The Lovers covers that reading. This page is about the birth pairing, the lifelong shape. The Lovers is the soul card of 15/6 alone, so the single-card page for 6 is the other useful companion: the same soul card, without The Devil in front of it.

The Devil as a year card

The Devil as a year card is a theme of attachments and honesty with yourself. In the picture the two figures wear chains loose enough to lift off, so the card asks what holds you that you could set down — a habit, a dependence, a fear, a pattern of giving away your power.

It is not a card of punishment or of something bad lying in wait. It is an invitation to look at what you desire and what you are bound to without shame, and to ask which of those ties you still choose. Naming a pattern clearly is often the first loosening of it.

Which birthdays get it as a year card

Add your birth month and day to the year, then reduce as for the Personality card. It gives the year a theme to reflect on; it does not say what the year will bring.

  • What do I keep returning to even though it no longer serves me?
  • Which chain in my life is looser than I have been telling myself?

Questions to sit with

  • Which of my strongest attachments have I chosen recently, rather than simply continued?
  • What do I want with real intensity, and what would it look like to aim that wanting on purpose?
  • Where do I judge in other people an appetite I have not yet made peace with in myself?
