The Moon
18
intuition · dream · the unverified · passage by night
“I pass between the towers, and meet the Moon's eye unflinching.”
A path between two towers reaches toward distant mountains. The Moon lights it with borrowed light; what is seen is not wholly true — but the road itself is.

The Hermit

solitude · inner light · guidance · discernment
“I walk alone, and judge the path by a single step of lamplight.”
An old man stands alone on a snowy summit, the lantern hanging forward a small length of gold — he walks slowly, yet each next step falls exactly where the light has just reached. Withdrawal here is so that hearing may become clearer.

The Moon in front
The Rider-Waite-Smith picture shows a moon with a face, drops falling from it, above a path that runs from a pool between two towers toward distant hills. A dog and a wolf howl on either side of the path, and a crayfish crawls up out of the water. Nothing here is clearly defined.
As a personality card, The Moon describes a rich inner life, a strong imagination and a comfort with things that do not resolve neatly. People with this card often have vivid dreams, an intuitive feel for what lies under the surface, and sometimes a vulnerability to anxiety or confusion when the inner world grows louder than the outer one. The card is not a warning. It names the terrain.
The Hermit underneath
The soul card is The Hermit: a cloaked old man on a snowy peak, staff in one hand and a lantern in the other, a six-pointed star shining inside it. He has climbed away from the crowd, not to escape it but to see.
As a soul card, The Hermit is what lets an 18/9 person find their way in The Moon's half-light. Beneath the sensitivity is a seeker with a strong need for meaning, a preference for truths tested personally, and a capacity for solitude that is restorative rather than lonely.
There is a quiet rhyme in the two pictures. The Moon lights the whole landscape faintly with light it only reflects; The Hermit carries a small, steady light of his own. An 18/9 life often moves from the first kind of light toward the second.
Night journey
The tension in this pair is between being immersed and being apart. The Moon pulls inward and downward, into feeling, memory and imagination. The Hermit steps back to observe. An 18/9 person may swing between being overwhelmed by impressions and withdrawing so far that nothing can reach them. The Moon's shadow is illusion and fear; The Hermit's is isolation.
Working together, they make a good night traveler. The Moon supplies the material: dreams, symbols, the things that rise from the water. The Hermit supplies the lantern and the patience to look at that material clearly, one step of the path at a time.
Living with 18/9
A useful practice for this pairing is to give The Moon a page and The Hermit a pen: to write down dreams, moods and impressions, and then to return to them later, alone, with a clearer eye. The Hermit is the soul card of 18/9 alone, because 9 is the last single digit and 27 is beyond the Major Arcana. The single-card page for 9 shows The Hermit without The Moon's shifting light around him, and is a useful companion to this one.
The Moon as a year card
The Moon was last a year card in 1978 and next becomes one in 2036. For the years in between, the sum of a year, a birth month and a birth day never has digits that total exactly 18. A calculation for this year or next will not land on it.
If The Moon is your birth card, or a card that keeps finding you, you can take its theme into a season by choice: paying attention to dreams and moods, sitting with uncertainty instead of rushing to explain it, and noticing where fear is filling in what you cannot yet see.
Which birthdays get it as a year card
Add your birth month and day to the year, then reduce as for the Personality card. It gives the year a theme to reflect on; it does not say what the year will bring.

- What do I know from my own experience that no one could have told me?
