The Hermit
9
solitude · inner light · guidance · discernment
“I walk alone, and judge the path by a single step of lamplight.”
An old man stands alone on a snowy summit, the lantern hanging forward a small length of gold — he walks slowly, yet each next step falls exactly where the light has just reached. Withdrawal here is so that hearing may become clearer.

The soul card of 18
Nine is the last single digit, so The Hermit is the soul card of just one pair: 18/9, with The Moon in front. The Moon is a night landscape of uncertain light, a path winding between two towers, a dog and a wolf howling, a crayfish climbing from the water. Beneath that ambiguity, The Hermit is the lantern. An 18/9 person moves through dreams, moods and unknowns carrying their own source of light.
If your number is 9, the 18/9 page shows The Hermit in a darker, more dreamlike setting. It is a reminder that solitude is not always quiet; sometimes it is where the strangest material surfaces.
Living with a doubled Hermit
The Hermit's shadow is isolation passed off as wisdom: withdrawing so far that nothing can test what you know, or keeping your light hidden because sharing it feels like exposure. With no second card to pull you outward, it helps to notice who you have let into your solitude lately, and what you have learned there that someone else could use.
The Hermit as a year card
The Hermit as a year card makes solitude and inner study the theme. The figure on the mountain carries his own lamp, enough light for the next step, not the whole road. The year's question is what you learn when you step back from the noise and look by your own light.
That need not mean withdrawing from people. It can mean protecting time to think, reading slowly, walking without a destination, or seeking out one wise conversation instead of many quick ones. The Hermit also asks what you have learned that someone behind you on the path could use.
Which birthdays get it as a year card
Add your birth month and day to the year, then reduce as for the Personality card. It gives the year a theme to reflect on; it does not say what the year will bring.
