Death (Major Arcana XIII) almost never points at literal physical death. The classical meaning is the decisive end of a chapter and the transformation that follows — a role ending, a relationship turning a page, a self-image falling away. The white rose and rising sun in the image are the tell: something drops so something else can rise. Genuine danger in a reading usually requires a cluster of cards pointing the same way, not this single arcanum.

Tarot predicts specific future events and dates.

Tarot is good at surfacing the inner structure of the present — your current motives, blind spots, unspoken trade-offs — and poor at pinning exact dates or other people's actions. Think of it as a mirror of this moment's decision terrain, not a crystal ball. The future is a probability zone built from thousands of small choices; tarot can sharpen your side of those choices, but it cannot place bets on the world on the other end.

Reading for yourself is unreliable — you must pay a practitioner.

This is a long-running debate in tarot. One camp says self-reading is corrupted by recency bias — you read what you want to see. The other says self-reading is the core practice, and observer bias is not a curse. The house view: self-reading is a learnable craft. Write the cards' meanings down before mapping them onto your situation; forbid same-day re-draws; keep a journal trail. Those habits shrink the bias to a workable level. Hiring a reader is fine too — it's a different relationship, not a more accurate one.

Tarot can't answer questions about work / love / health / which option to pick.

Distinguish cannot from should not. Most ordinary life questions belong at the table — provided you rewrite them from closed ("will X happen") to open ("what haven't I seen about X"). The genuinely ill-suited questions are three: medical diagnosis, legal judgment, and another person's private interior. Hand the first two to a professional; the third is outside what tarot can answer honestly.

A new deck must be cleansed with salt, moonlight, crystals, or sage or it will catch bad luck.
· Reality ·
Cleansing rituals have real psychological weight — they help you draw the line of "this is my instrument." But they are not literal curse-removal, nor a magical law that bad things happen if skipped. A moonlit windowsill, three breaths, or a slow flip through the whole deck will do the same work. Note also that white-sage burning and Palo Santo are tied to Indigenous North American and South American traditions; large-scale commercial use raises appropriation and sustainability concerns. If you want a traditional cleanse, learn the source, or pick something local.

A reversed card is always a bad omen.

A reversal is not an opposite. The same energy may be blocked, internalized, or overflowing — three distinct frames. Three of Cups upright is celebration; reversed is rarely simple loneliness, more often "wanting to celebrate but lacking the energy" or "celebrating so much the balance breaks." Some readers skip reversals entirely and let neighboring cards provide the layer — equally valid. What matters is picking a consistent rule for yourself.

Tarot gets misused as magical therapy, so any emotional use of it is dangerous.

Tarot is a digital grimoire — a journaling-style tool, not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, or substitute professional care for any condition. Used as a daily sort-through, a pause before a decision, or a mirror in a relationship, it is a healthy practice. If you are in acute distress — severe depression, trauma flashbacks, thoughts of self-harm, or any medical emergency — please reach a qualified professional first. Tarot can accompany, but should not replace. Naming that boundary actually makes the ritual side cleaner.

RWS (1909) has the largest footprint and shaped most modern textbooks. But Marseille — the French family reaching back to the fifteenth century — is older, its minor arcana largely geometric, training the eye on number and suit. Thoth (Crowley and Lady Harris, 1940s) integrates astrology and Qabalah into a single system. These are three grammars of one structure, not orthodoxy versus heresy. Pick the one your eye lands on now and begin there.

No one else may ever touch your deck, and you must never lend it.
· Reality ·
This is a psychological ritual, not an occult law. For a deck you usually use alone, letting others flip through it can disturb the familiarity you have built with it — not because it "picks up their energy," but because you treat it as a private journal. If you want friends to shuffle and draw with you, that is entirely fine. The decision sits at your own boundary: which deck stays shared, which stays only yours. Personal preference, not dogma.
Strip away these nine myths and what remains is still interesting: a symbol system more than five centuries old, practiced enough to point your attention at the lines of yourself you have not yet written.
Refusing superstition is not refusing seriousness. The worth of a ritual is not whether it "works" — it is whether it makes you willing to slow down for a few minutes and look at yourself another way. That slowing down is tarot's most durable gift.
